Ayurveda, or ‘the science of life’ in Sanskrit is one of the world’s oldest holistic healing systems. It originated over 5,000 years ago in India and is based on the belief that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit.
In Ayurveda, the five elements that are found in all living things – ether, air, fire, water, and earth – are the building blocks of life. Whilst this foundation unites all humans, the manifestation of those elements through three ‘qualities’ or doshas – Vata, Pitta, Kapha – is what gives rise to our differences. How the doshas appear, and in what proportion, is what makes each of us unique. The balance of the doshas in each person is believed to promote health and wellbeing, while imbalance leads to ill health and disease. This can be corrected with diet, herbal remedies, meditation and breathing exercises, as well as healing massage techniques that use dosha-specific herbs and oils to address the imbalance.
