Sustainability with Aequem

Non-sustainable fashion is having a devastating effect in the UK, with landfills swamped in fast-fashion throwaway garments. Worryingly, these garments are being produced just as quickly as they're being dumped. Less than 1% of material used to produce clothing is recycled into new clothing at the end of its life - a cycle that needs to end!

With lockdown enforced across much of the world, grinding transport to a halt, many of us were shocked to see the immediate effects this had on the environment. In London, the air felt fresher than ever before and it was so enjoyable to walk around or go for a run without inhaling fumes.

In terms of sustainable fashion, with more time on our hands than ever during quarantine we've found that more of us are asking questions and investigating brands ethos and practices. It’s common knowledge now that the fashion industry is one of the most polluting sectors in the world, but since production factories closed in China there has been a 25% fall in gas emissions. A significantly large change in such a short period, which really goes to show that major changes can happen quickly if the world doesn't prioritise profits over globe health. Fashion shouldn’t literally cost the earth!

We must ask these fast-fashion brands why they have become so comfortable with their unsustainable practises? We hope that the disruption to the supply chain has given fast-fashion brands time to think, reflect, take responsibility for their actions and implement change. As consumers, we have the power to influence brand choices. By demanding change and responsibility we are slowly but surely seeing action towards a more conscious and sustainable industry.
