The Detox 'Yes' list, Weekly Planner and Healthy Recipes
When working with clients, I like to provide a detailed ‘Detox Yes List’, Weekly Planner and Healthy Recipes to support them on their detox journey.
Buy fresh & organic foods
Make sure you buy fresh, organic and where possible local and seasonal produce as it will have the highest nutrient content. The more variety of recipes you include each week, the better.
Local and seasonal produce will have the highest nutrient content and reduced toxin content. The more variety of recipes you include each week, the better. If it's not possible to source organic fruit and vegetables, I work with clients to help them avoid the 'Dirty Dozen', focus on the 'Clean 15', and peel or soak other fruit and veg in a bicarbonate soda solution.
Reduce acidity
Reduce acidic foods (meat, rice, sweeteners) and add more alkaline foods (most vegetables, buckwheat, quinoa, lentils) into your diet.
*Apple cider vinegar is acidic on contact, but is actually alkaline for the body and should not be excluded.
Reduce toxic-load
Remove foods containing chemicals, irritants, allergens, pro-inflammatory foods, mucus-forming foods and processed foods from your diet.
Caffeine and smoking
Remove caffeine, alcohol and if possible cigarettes, as they negatively impact adrenal function and liver detoxification.
Avoid non-organic meat and fish, as they often contain hormones and antibiotics. Watch out for genetically modified foods.
When will your body enter detox mode?
Reduce the workload of digestion by eating smaller portions and include at least two blended meals a day (soups, broths, smoothies etc). They will be metabolized faster, allowing your body to enter a detox mode.
Allow at least 12 hours between the last meal of the day and the first meal of the next day. Detox mode starts after 8 hours of your last meal and you need approximately 4 hours for proper cleansing.
Scheduling your meals
Have a regular schedule for meals and eat only when you’re hungry. Try not to snack between meals. If you can not help it, stick to healthy snacks – hummus with vegetables sticks, slice of apple with peanut butter, a few nuts or dried fruit. Do not snack every time you think you are hungry. Try drinking a large glass water or herbal tea, as our body often confuses dehydration with hunger.
Make sure your meals contain good fats and proteins to keep blood sugar levels stable and avoid constant snacking.
Stay hydrated!
Drink at least 2 liters of room temperature water a day in addition to herbal teas. This will help keep you hydrated, aid your body's detox processes and flush out toxins from the body.
